Arthritis

What is arthritis?

  • A condition characterized by cartilage damage, swelling, stiffness, and tenderness to a joint

Symptoms

  • Joint pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, tenderness or sensitivity to touch, swelling

Different types of arthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis

Arthroscopic Surgery

  • Minimally invasive orthopedic procedure used to diagnose and treat joint problems through small incisions. Surgeons use tiny cameras to visualize the inside of the joint to provide clear and precise assessments.
  • Most commonly used for knee meniscus tears, rotator cuff tears, cartilage defects, impingement syndromes.
  • Recovery time varies on the specific procedure and factors involving everyone’s individual healing process.

Sports Injury

No matter your age or how active you are, anyone can be susceptible to a sports injury.

Most common injuries include:

  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Ligament tears
  • Tendon tears
  • Fractures (broken bones)
  • Dislocations

RICE should be used right away for an acute injury

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation

Knee Replacement

  • Knee arthroplasty is an orthopedic surgery performed to replace damaged cartilage with an artificial joint.
  • The purpose is to relieve pain, correct joint deformities, and improve overall function to return to normal everyday functional activities
  • Physical therapy can assist with pre-rehabilitation to make sure you are in the best shape prior to your surgery
  • During post-surgery rehabilitation we focus on reducing pain, regaining your ROM (range of motion), strength and overall function to walk, stand and perform your normal everyday activities

Shoulder Replacement

Total shoulder replacement
  • Medical procedure performed by an orthopedic surgeon to replace damaged shoulder bones and replace with an artificial joint.
  • Purpose is to address persistent pain and improve ROM (range of motion) and strength
  • Most commonly caused by arthritic changes
  • During post-surgery rehabilitation we focus on reducing pain, regaining your ROM (range of motion), strength and overall function to your normal everyday activities.
Reverse shoulder replacement
  • Another medical procedure performed by an orthopedic surgeon to replace the damaged shoulder bones, however reverses the position of the “ball and socket” shoulder joint
  • This specific procedure is recommended if there is persistent pain, inability to use your arm for normal activities, and has severe damage to the rotator cuff that would be insufficient to support the total shoulder replacement
  • During post-surgery rehabilitation we focus on reducing pain, regaining your ROM (range of motion), strength and overall function to your normal everyday activitie

Hip Replacement

  • A medical procedure performed by an orthopedic surgeon who replaces the arthritic or damaged hip joint with new artificial components
  • The purpose is to address hip pain and improve function for basic tasks such as walking or standing as part of your normal activity level

Anterior Hip approach

The orthopedic surgeon makes the incision through the anterior portion of the hip

Posterior Hip approach

The orthopedic surgeon makes the incision along the side and posterior (back) of the hip

  • During post-surgery rehabilitation we focus on reducing pain, regaining your ROM (range of motion), strength and overall function to your normal everyday activities.

Ankle Replacement

  • A medical procedure performed by an orthopedic surgeon caused by the advanced osteoarthritis, injury or infection
  • Patients are usually expected to wear and splint or brace initially and when recommended, begin physical therapy following specific protocol from the surgeon
  • Regaining ROM (range of motion), strength and overall function to return to their normal activity level
  • During post-surgery rehabilitation we focus on reducing pain, regaining your ROM (range of motion), strength and overall function to your normal everyday activities.

Ligament/Tendon Repairs

The orthopedic surgeon will recommend the best approach based on imaging services performed (MRI, CT scan, Xray) and decide whether to be more conservative by recommending PT or potential surgical repair if injury is severe

Ligament repair vs Tendon repair
Tendon repair
    • Strong, flexible tissue that connects muscle to bone that had been torn or ruptures
    • Common tendon repairs
      • Rotator cuff repair
      • Achilles tendon repair
      • Biceps tendon repair
      • Quadriceps tendon repair
      • Patella tendon repair
Ligament repair
    • Fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones together, that was torn or ruptured
    • Common ligament repairs
      • ACL repair
      • Meniscus repair
      • Ankle ligament repairs

During post-surgery rehabilitation we focus on reducing pain, regaining your ROM (range of motion), strength and overall function to your normal everyday activities.
